history
From May 1940 ( western campaign ) to autumn 1944, all of Belgium was occupied by German armed forces. In the autumn of 1944, Hotton was liberated by Western Allied troops. On December 16, 1944, they were surprised by the start of the German Ardennes offensive . Around December 24, 1944, US forces (290th Infantry Regiment) occupied Hotton; they were ordered to hold the place at all costs. Later, troops from the 83rd Division came to her aid. Extremely wintry weather made the fighting even more difficult. When the weather cleared, the Allies were able to use their absolute air superiority again (the Air Force suffered from a lack of fuel, a lack of spare parts and a lack of aircraft).
