Philippe Courard (born September 2, 1966 in Namur ) is a Belgian politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS). He has been President of the Parliament of the French Community (Wallonia-Brussels Federation) since November 2014 . Courard was Minister of the Walloon Region and, until September 2014, State Secretary for Social Affairs, Families, the Disabled and Science in the Di Rupo federal government under Elio Di Rupo (PS). He was also the mayor of Hotton for many years .

Life

For a long time, Philippe Courard was only politically active as mayor of the municipality of Hotton at the local level before he was appointed Walloon Minister for Employment and Education in 2003 after Marie Arena (PS) left the Walloon government to join the federal government To take office. After the regional elections in 2004, Courard was appointed Minister of the Interior in Wallonia under Prime Minister Jean-Claude Van Cauwenberghe (PS), which also oversaw the local authorities. From 2007 onwards he felt the effects of the so-called " Carolorégienne Affair ", a scandal in which the embezzlement of public funds in Charleroi was covered by high-ranking PS politicians and which ultimately resulted in Van Cauwenberghe's resignation.

After the regional elections in 2009, Courard initially thought that he would be able to continue his office under Prime Minister Rudy Demotte (PS), but he was promoted to the Leterme II federal government , where he took over the post of State Secretary for Social Integration and Poverty Reduction. In the successor government under Prime Minister Di Rupo, Courard was appointed State Secretary for Social Affairs, Families, the Disabled and Science, with the professional risks.

After the federal and community elections on May 25, 2014, Philippe Courard left the Chamber of Deputies and was elected to the Walloon Parliament . On September 15, 2014, he left the outgoing Di Rupo government and became leader of the PS group in the Walloon Parliament. In November 2014, Courard took over the chairmanship of the Parliament of the French Community after Jean-Charles Luperto (PS) resigned from this office on allegations of exhibitionism . He handed over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group in the Walloon Parliament to Christophe Collignon (PS).
