Rudy Demotte

Rudy Demotte (born June 3, 1963 in Ronse ) is a Belgian politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS). At the federal level, he was Minister of Economics and Science and later Minister of Health and Social Affairs. He was Prime Minister of the Walloon Region from 2007 to 2014 and has been Prime Minister of the French Community since 2008 .

Life

Demotte comes from a modest background and is the son of a Walloon father and a Flemish mother. He grew up in the Walloon community of Flobecq and in the Flemish Brakel . He is therefore also able to speak Dutch .

He studied political science and international relations at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He received his diploma in 1986 with a thesis on the history of the Belgian Workers' Party (fr. Parti Ouvrier Belge , nl. Belgische Werkliedenpartij ) in West Hainaut .

Demotte made a career within the PS. From 1985 he was secretary of the Young Socialists and from 1986 to 1992 their president. From 1988 to 1990 he worked in Philippe Busquin's cabinet . In the 1990s he held various functions within the socialist federation of Ath - Tournai - Mouscron (West Hainaut). Since then he has been one of the most important socialist politicians in Belgium.

In 2010 Demotte was elected chairman of the local section of the PS in Tournai. To mark the occasion, he announced that he would fight for the post of mayor of Tournai in the 2012 local elections.

After the elections on May 25, 2014, the PS decided to entrust the leadership of the governments of the Walloon Region and the French Community (Wallonia-Brussels Federation) to two different people. While Rudy Demotte was re-elected Prime Minister of the French Community, Paul Magnette (PS) succeeded him as Prime Minister of Wallonia.
