Philippe Busquin

Philippe Busquin [ fiˈlip bysˈkɛ̃ ] (born January 6, 1941 in Feluy ) is a Belgian politician.

Life

education

Busquin studied at the Free University of Brussels and graduated in physics in 1962 .

Wallonia

From 1977 to 1978 he was a member of the Hainaut Province . From 1982 to 1986 he was Walloon Minister of Energy and Budget and then Minister of Economics in 1986.

From 1995 to 1999 he was mayor of Seneffe .

Belgium

From 1974 to 1994 he was a member of the Belgian parliament. He was then a senator from 1994 to 1999.

From 1980 to 1982 he was Belgian Minister of Education, in 1981 also Minister of the Interior and 1987 Minister of Social Affairs, from 1992 to 1999 he was Minister of State.

European Union

From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice President of the European Socialists . In 1999 he was elected to the European Parliament , from which he resigned after eight weeks, to serve as Commissioner for Science and Research until 2004 . He was then again a member of the European Parliament until 2009 .

He is an honorary member of the Academia Europaea .
