Guido De Padt

Guido De Padt (born May 23, 1954 in Geraardsbergen ) is a Belgian politician of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD) party. From December 30, 2008 to July 17, 2009 he held the post of Belgian Interior Minister. Since then he has been government commissioner responsible for internal audits of public companies.

Life

De Padt studied law and worked as a lawyer for a long time until he turned full-time into politics in 2001. He began his political career in 1982 as a member of the East Flanders Province Council and as a lay judge in Geraardsbergen . From 2000 to 2006 he was mayor of Geraardsbergen and then worked as aldermen for culture, tourism, library, archive and cultural heritage as well as chairman of the public welfare center. De Padt has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2003 , where he dealt in particular with the issues of road safety and mobility.

In the Van Rompuy government , De Padt succeeded his party colleague Patrick Dewael as Minister of the Interior. After the government was replaced on July 17, 2009, he was commissioned as government commissioner to organize internal audits in public companies . He also performed this role in the Leterme II government . He has been a co-opted senator since the federal elections in 2010 .
