Jan Jambon

Johan "Jan" Jambon (born April 26, 1960 in Genk ) is a Belgian businessman and politician of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). He has been Prime Minister of Flanders since October 2019 .

Life

Jan Jambon first studied computer science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) before completing an MBA at the University of Antwerp (UA). He began his career at the IT company IBM , before moving to various service companies in the HR area (including SD Worx ) and finally to the financial sector, where he found his way into higher management.

His interest in politics led Jan Jambon at a young age to the Volksuniejongeren (Vujo), the youth movement of the Flemish nationalist party Volksunie . However, he left this in 1988 when the Volksunie took part in the then national government. With Peter De Rover (N-VA) he moved to the Vlaamse Volksbewegung ( Flemish People's Movement ), a political movement that campaigns for Flanders to become independent as a state. Within the Flemish People's Movement, he held various official offices. In this function he also appeared as a guest speaker at a conference of the Sint-Maartensfonds , an association of Flemish former Eastern Front fighters ( including the Flemish Legion and the Waffen SS ). This appearance caused a lot of talk in the media , initially in 2007 and later again in 2013, after the right-wing extremist association Nieuw-Solidaristische Alternatief published corresponding photo material. Former Flemish Minister Johan Sauwens ( CD&V ) had to resign in 2001 after it became known that he had attended the same meeting.

In 2006 Jan Jambon left the Flemish People's Movement to enter active politics. He initially stood for election in Brasschaat for the N-VA, where he was appointed lay judge for finance and economics. A year later Jambon made the leap to the federal Chamber of Deputies, where he took over the parliamentary group chairmanship for the N-VA. In the municipal elections in 2012, Jan Jambon was finally able to win the mayor's office in Brasschaat.

When the government was formed after the federal elections on May 25, 2014 , Jan Jambon was one of the N-VA negotiators alongside Bart De Wever and Johan Van Overtveldt . In the so-called "Sweden Coalition", the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ), Jan Jambon received the post of Vice Prime Minister and Interior Minister in October 2014. He left office when his party left the Michel government in December 2018 .

Jambon has been Prime Minister of Flanders since October 2, 2019 and leads a coalition government made up of N-VA, CD&V and Open Vld
