Bart (Albert Liliane) De Wever (born December 21, 1970 in Mortsel ) is a Belgian politician, member of the Flemish Parliament , incumbent ruling mayor of Antwerp and chairman of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA).

Life

De Wever was born on December 21, 1970 and studied history at the University of Antwerp and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . At first he was a research assistant at the University of Leuven, but he gave up his doctorate in order to devote himself entirely to his political career. Since 2004 he has been chairman of the N-VA, a Flemish nationalist party that was affiliated with Yves Leterme's Christian-Democratic CD&V from 2006 to 2008 . He played a central role in one of the longest-running government formations in Belgian history, in which Yves Leterme ultimately became Prime Minister in 2009. In the last national election in Belgium on June 13, 2010, the N-VA, led by Bart De Wever, became the largest party not only in Flanders, but also in Belgium with 27.8 percent of the vote. During the subsequent negotiations on the formation of a new federal government, he acted for a week as the “informateur” of King Albert II. After months of negotiations, Elio Di Rupo was able to form a government without and without De Wevers N-VA from a coalition of six Belgian parties Form a Flemish majority, which was sworn in on December 6, 2011.

Political ideas

De Wever calls himself a nationalist and conservative. He and his party are seen as separatists because he would like Flanders to be independent; he also rejects cultural rights for the French-speaking minority in Flanders. He could envision a collaboration between an independent Flanders and the Netherlands, he told the Dutch newspaper Trouw in April 2010, but not a merger, as Geert Wilders wanted.

Xenophobia and xenophobia are an issue in Belgium that has won many votes for the Vlaams Belang party . Bart de Wever tries to differentiate his party from any radicalism. In his opinion, immigrants should not disappear into society in Flanders , but could give it color. First of all, those wishing to be naturalized would have to learn the language and accept the “basic rules of our culture”. Then it is about accepting the equality of women and homosexuals. One could not forbid the new ones religion, but they would have to adapt their religion to the Flemish culture. De Wever supports the burqa ban enacted in Belgium in April 2010 because clothing that covers the whole body creates a culture of fear and seclusion.

In the city council elections in Antwerp on October 14, 2012, Bart de Wever ran for the post of mayor. His party was the strongest party with 37.7 percent of the vote. He has been the ruling mayor of Antwerp since 2013.

As Mayor of Antwerp, he has stipulated that foreigners pay 15 times the amount (250 instead of 17 euros per person) to register as residents of Antwerp. The reason for this is the higher workload for applications from foreigners.

In view of the refugee crisis in Europe , he accused Chancellor Merkel in 2016 that her refugee policy of open borders was an "epoch-making mistake".
