Johan Vande Lanotte

Johan Cyrille Corneel Vande Lanotte (born July 6, 1955 in Poperinge ) is a Belgian politician of the Socialist Partij Anders (sp.a). He has been a parliamentarian for many years and held several ministerial offices at the federal level, most recently from 2011 to 2014 as Minister of Economics in the Di Rupo government . He has been the mayor of Ostend since 2015 .

Life

Vande Lanotte grew up in Stavele (today a sub-municipality of Alveringem ). In 1974 he went to the University of Antwerp , where he passed his diploma in political and social sciences in 1978 and then moved to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel , which he left in 1981 with a degree in law . In 1986 he received his doctorate in the same subject from the University of Ghent and was awarded the prize of the Belgian Institute for Administrative Sciences for his work.

In 1988, Vande Lanotte was appointed head of cabinet to then Interior Minister Louis Tobback . In 1991 he was elected as a representative of the people in the Chamber of Deputies , where he took over the office of chairman of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into human trafficking. In 1994 he succeeded Tobback as Minister of the Interior. When Marc Dutroux managed to escape in April 1998, Vande Lanotte resigned from his ministerial office. Instead, he took over the leadership of the SP's election campaign with a view to the June 1999 elections.

In 1999, Vande Lanotte was appointed Minister for Budget, Social Integration and Social Economy. In 2003 he took over the office of Minister for Budget, Community Facilities and the North Sea. From 2005 to 2007 he was chairman of the sp.a.

In 2006 Vande Lanotte was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State .

On October 21, 2010, Johan Vande Lanotte was commissioned by King Albert II to continue the formation of the government, after neither Bart De Wever ( N-VA ) nor Elio Di Rupo ( PS ) succeeded in becoming a viable one after the elections on June 13, 2010 To raise government. After Vande Lanotte also failed to advance talks on state reform , he resigned on January 26, 2011. When a new Belgian government was formed on December 6, 2011 under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, Johan Vande Lanotte became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy, Consumers and the North Sea.

At the end of August 2015 Johan Vande Lanotte took his oath as Mayor of Ostend.
