Guy Mathot

Guy Mathot (born April 26, 1941 in Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz , † February 21, 2005 in Liège ) was a Belgian politician.

Life

Guy Mathot studied biology at the University of Liège and graduated with a licentiate . From 1968 to 1972 he was National Secretary of the Parti Socialiste . In 1970 he was elected mayor of Seraing .

In 1971 he became a member of parliament. In 1977 he was appointed Minister for Public Works and Walloon Affairs in the Tindemans government . In 1980 he became national minister of education and then minister of interior and budget. The next career leap followed in 1981. In addition to his position as budget minister, he was now also vice prime minister. In 1987 he became provincial senator, then in 1991 senator. From 1992 he was again Minister of the Interior and also local authorities. As part of this, he distributed grants for work in the Walloon government of Guy Spitaels .

In 1994 his immunity was lifted. He also resigned his political mandate, as he was accused of passive corruption in the course of the investigation into the Agusta affair . In 1998, however, he was acquitted of the allegations. In 2000 he was again Mayor of Seraing and in 2003 President of the Liège Federation des Parti Socialiste.

Guy Mathot died of cancer in 2005 in the Center hospitalier régional de la Citadelle in Liège .
