François Victor Marie Ghislain Schollaert (born August 19, 1851 in Wilsele , Brabant , † June 29, 1917 in Sainte-Adresse ) was a Belgian Catholic politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional activities

After studying law and obtaining a doctorate in law, he worked as a lawyer in Leuven . As such, he was chairman of the von Löwen Bar Association from 1893 to 1895, 1900 to 1902 and 1904 to 1906.

Political career

Member of Parliament and Speaker of Parliament

Schollaert was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1888. There he represented the interests of the Katholieke Partij until his death . In 1890 he was one of the co-founders of the farmers' union.

From 1901 to 1908 and from 1912 until his death in 1917 he was President of the Chamber of Deputies.

Minister and Prime Minister 1908 to 1911

From 1895 to 1899 he was Minister of the Interior in the cabinet of Jules de Burlet and Paul de Smet de Naeyer .

On January 9, 1908, he became Prime Minister himself, succeeding Jules de Trooz . In his cabinet he was also Minister of the Interior (1908 to 1910), Minister of Agriculture (1908 to 1910) and Minister of Art and Science (1910 to 1911). In his function as Prime Minister he was also the acting Regent of Belgium from December 17 to 23, 1909 after the death of King Leopold II . On June 17, 1911, he resigned as Prime Minister and was replaced by his party friend Charles de Broqueville .

The Schollaert Canal , a waterway in the Antarctic Palmer Archipelago , is named after him.
