Province of Brabant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The former province of Brabant is now divided into Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant and the Brussels-Capital Region.

Brabant was a province in the geographical center of the Kingdom of Belgium with the administrative seat in Brussels . The area was 3358 km 2 . It was the only province in the country that spanned two language areas and three regions. The name of the province referred to the historic Duchy of Brabant .

The province emerged in 1815 under the name of South Brabant from the French Dyle department , after the Kingdom of the United Netherlands (1815 to 1830) had been assigned to the House of Orange on the basis of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna . In 1830 the southern part of the kingdom separated, which was subsequently called the Kingdom of Belgium , but was not recognized by the Netherlands until 1839.

In the course of the federalization of Belgium in 1995, the province was divided into the provinces of Flemish Brabant (part of the Flemish Region ) and Walloon Brabant (part of the Walloon Region ) along the border between the Dutch- speaking area in the north and the French- speaking area in the south . The Brussels-Capital Region took over provincial powers for its own area and has since been considered to be provincial-free.
