Jules Vandenpeereboom

Jules Henri Pierre François Vandenpeereboom (born March 18, 1843 in Kortrijk , † March 6, 1917 in Anderlecht ) was a Belgian Catholic politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional activities

After studying law and gaining a doctorate in law, Vandenpeereboom worked as a lawyer in his native Kortrijk.

Political career

In 1878 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies. There he represented the interests of the Katholieke Partij of the Arrondissement of Kortrijk until 1900 .

From 1884 to 1899 he was Minister for Railways, Post and Telegraphy in the cabinets of Auguste Beernaert , Jules de Burlet and Paul de Smet de Naeyer . In this office he introduced bilingual postage stamps between 1891 and 1893 . In de Smet de Naeyer's cabinet he was also Minister of War from 1896 to 1899.

On January 24, 1899, he succeeded de Smet de Naeyer in the office of Prime Minister. However, he only held this office until August 5, 1899. At the same time, he also retained the offices of Minister of War and Minister of Railways, Post and Telegraphy.

In 1900 he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his political services.

From 1904 to 1917 he was Senator for the Province of West Flanders .
