Théodore Joseph Albéric Marie Lefèvre (born January 17, 1914 in Ghent , † September 18, 1973 in Woluwé-Saint-Lambert ) was a Belgian Christian Democratic politician and Prime Minister from 1961 to 1965.

Degree and lawyer

After studying law and obtaining a doctorate in law, he worked as a lawyer in Ghent.

MP, Minister and Senator

From 1946 to 1971 he represented the Christian People's Party (CVP) in the Chamber of Deputies. Between 1950 and 1961 he was also chairman of the CVP. In this position he was replaced by Paul Vanden Boeynants . 1960 to 1965 he was also chairman of the Nouvelles Equipes Internationales (NEI), a predecessor organization of the European People's Party (EPP) .

As early as 1958, he was given the honorary title of "Minister of State". From 1968 to 1971 he was a minister without portfolio in Gaston Eyskens' third cabinet, with special responsibility for science development and programs. After his election to the Senate in 1971, he was State Secretary for Science Development and Programs.

Prime Minister 1961 to 1965

On April 25, 1961, he was elected Prime Minister to succeed Gaston Eyskens.

During his tenure, the economic boom resulted in an expansion of the universities, a tax reform, a reform of health and accident insurance and improvements in the protection of minors. In addition, laws to improve public security and the parliamentary position of the political groups were passed during his tenure. In addition, Lefèvre campaigned for the definition of the language regions and the language compromise for the capital region of Brussels .

On July 28, 1965 he was replaced in the office of Prime Minister by Pierre Harmel .
