In 1986 Boeynants was convicted of fraud and tax evasion . He was sentenced to three years parole. This made his interim plans to run for mayor of Brussels ruined.
kidnapping
Vanden Boeynants was kidnapped on January 14, 1989 by members of the so-called Haemers Gang, who carried out several armed attacks in the 1980s and three days later demanded thirty million Belgian francs for the release of Boeynants in the daily Le Soir . A month later, on February 23, Vanden Boeynants was released for a ransom payment of an unknown amount. The criminals were later caught and Patrick Haemers (* 1953), who was caught in Brazil in May 1989 and was the head of the gang, committed suicide on May 14, 1993, while the other two gang members were able to break out of prison that same year.
