Prosper Poullet

Prosper Antoine Marie Joseph Count Poullet (born December 9, 1868 in Leuven , † December 23, 1937 ibid) was a Belgian Catholic politician and Prime Minister.

Life dates and professional activities

After studying law and philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven , Count Poullet, after gaining a doctorate in law (1890), embarked on an academic career as a professor of law at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was also a doctor of philosophy and literature. From 1927 to 1930 he was chairman of the Flemish Lawyers Association.

He also became a member of the KDStV Bavaria Bonn in 1892 in the CV . Back in Belgium he became a member of the KAV Lovania Leuven , a friendship of the CV.

Political career

He began his political career in 1908 as a member of the Chamber of Deputies . There he represented the interests of the Katholieke Partij until 1937 . Between 1911 and 1918 he was Minister of Arts and Sciences in the cabinet of Charles de Broqueville .

From 1918 to 1919 he was President of the Chamber of Deputies and then until 1920 Minister for Railways, Post and Telegraphy in the cabinet of Léon Delacroix .

In the cabinet of Georges Theunis , he was temporarily interior minister from 1924 to 1925. From May to June 1925, he was Minister of Economics in Aloys van de Vijvere's interim cabinet .

On June 17, 1925, he succeeded van de Vijvere himself as Prime Minister. In his government, which was in office until May 20, 1926, he also took over the Ministry of Justice and, at times, in 1926 the Ministry of National Defense. During his reign, Poullet had to deal with the occupation of the Ruhr at that time. After a financial crisis, his government had to resign. On May 20, 1926, he was awarded the royal honorary title of "Minister of State".

On October 22, 1932, Prime Minister de Broqueville appointed him Minister of the Interior in his cabinet, which was in office until November 20, 1934.

Count Poullet was honored with numerous domestic and foreign medals during his political career.
