Maggie Celine Louise De Block (born April 28, 1962 in Merchtem ) is a Belgian general practitioner and politician of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD). She has been Minister for Health and Social Affairs in the federal government since October 2014. De Block has also been a member of the federal Chamber of Deputies since 1999 .

Life

Maggie De Block gained greater prominence during her time as Federal State Secretary for Asylum Policy, Immigration and Social Integration in the Di Rupo government (2011 to 2014). On July 25, 2014, she took over the post of Federal Minister of Justice from Annemie Turtelboom (Open VLD), who in turn joined the Flemish government.

Maggie De Block was one of the most popular politicians in Flanders in 2013, according to surveys, and enjoys sympathy even in the French-speaking part of Belgium, although she was partly mocked after her appointment to the federal government for being overweight.

After the federal elections on May 25, 2014, in which she was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies, De Block was given health and social affairs in the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ).

In addition, De Block has been Vice President of the Open VLD since 2012.
