Sabine de Bethune

Baroness Sabine Louise Caroline de Bethune (born July 16, 1958 in Léopoldville, today Kinshasa , Democratic Republic of the Congo ) is a Belgian lawyer and politician for the Christians Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V). She is a long-time senator and was President of the Belgian Senate from 2011 to 2014 .

Life

Sabine de Bethune comes from a noble family and is the daughter of the former mayor of Kortrijk , Emmanuel Pierre de Bethune . Her father was doing business in the Belgian Congo , so Sabine de Bethune was born in the former colony town of Léopoldville (now Kinshasa ).

De Bethune studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven and initially worked as a lawyer in Kortrijk from 1983 to 1988. Then it was policy adviser in the cabinets of the CVP -Minister Paul Deprez (1985-1987) and Miet Smet (1987 to 1995).

Sabine de Bethune made her entry into active politics in 1995 when she was elected to the Belgian Senate for the CVP. There she took over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group from 2003 and replaced Danny Pieters ( N-VA ) as president of this assembly on October 11, 2011 . She held this office until 2014.
