Pieters was President of the Senate between 2010 and 2011 . He is an expert on the Belgian social security system and has taught this subject for a long time at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), of which he has been Vice-Rector since 2013. He began his political career in 1999 in the Chamber of Deputies for the former Volksunie (VU).

Life

Danny Pieters, who claims to be multilingual, did his doctorate in law in 1985 and then taught social security law at the law faculties of the Dutch University of Tilburg (1986 to 1992) and the KUL (since 1988) and the Katholieke Universiteit Brussel (KUB) (1992 to 1999). Pieters is also a recognized expert beyond Belgium, which gave him access to the General Secretariat of the European Institute of Social Security (since 1994) or to the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law in Munich (1996 to 1999). Thanks to his great expertise, Pieters was also a member of the supervisory board of the Belgian Central Social Security Database (ZDSS) and a member of the committee for the protection of private life, which mainly deals with data protection (1991 to 1999).

He got into federal politics in 1999, when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Flemish National People's Union (VU) (dissolved today, then under the name VU&ID). In fact, Pieters is known for his Flemish attitude and advocates the creation of a social security for Flanders . In 2001 he was one of the four members of the VU (ndl. De Bende van Vier ) who did not want to vote on the “Lambermont Agreement” for the fifth Belgian state reform negotiated by the Verhofstadt I government under Guy Verhofstadt ( VLD ), because they wanted to Reform did not go far enough, although the chairman of the Volksunie, Fons Borginon , had promised the government his support. The result was that the Volksunie fell into an internal dispute and eventually split up into several small splinter parties. The right wing of the Volksunie, to which Pieters also belonged, then founded the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). In the federal elections in 2003, however, the N-VA could only have a single MP, so Pieters had to leave politics again.

Under the chairmanship of Bart De Wever , the N-VA recovered and eventually joined the Flemish government under Kris Peeters ( CD&V ) after the regional elections in 2009 . In 2010, Danny Pieters was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Flemish Employment Office ( Vlaamse Dienst voor Arbeidsbemiddeling en Beroepsopleiding - VDAB) as a representative of the N-VA . In the same year he was elected to the Senate after the N-VA won the 2010 federal elections.

Danny Pieters was President of the Senate between July 2010 and October 2011 and the first Flemish nationalist to hold this post. Pieters was appointed president ahead of negotiations for a new federal government, as part of an agreement between his party and the Francophone socialists of the PS . The negotiations failed, however, and when a new government constellation without the N-VA was in prospect in autumn 2011, Pieters was replaced as president by CD&V Senator Sabine de Bethune .

In July 2013, Pieters left his seat in the Senate to return to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, where he took over the post of Vice-Rector. Since 2005 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .
