Volksunie

The Volksunie ( People's Union ) was a Belgian party . It was founded in 1954 and split into two parties in 2001: the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie and Spirit. Some former VU politicians have made careers in other parties, for example Bart Somers, who was in the meantime chairman of the Flemish Liberal VLD .

The VU was a nationalist and left-wing liberal party of the Flemish population group. In 1978 the radical nationalists separated from the VU and later formed the Vlaams Blok (since 2004: Vlaams Belang ).

The N-VA worked in a cartel with the Christian Democrats from 2003 to 2008 and became Belgium's strongest political force in the 2010 elections. It unites left and right political thoughts.

The Spirit group, however, initially worked with the socialists. It renamed itself as a party several times and was last called Sociaal-Liberale Partij . At the end of 2009 she joined the Flemish Green Party ( Groen! ).
