Melchior Wathelet (Senior)

Melchior Wathelet or Melchior Wathelet Senior (born March 6, 1949 in Petit-Rechain ) is a Belgian politician of the Center Démocrate Humaniste .

Life

He has degrees in law and economics ( University of Liège ) and a Master of Laws ( Harvard University ).

In 1992, as Belgian Minister of Justice, he was responsible for the early release from prison for Marc Dutroux, who was then convicted of kidnapping and raping five girls .

From September 19, 1995 to October 6, 2003 he was a judge at the European Court of Justice .

In 2012 he became Advocate General at the European Court of Justice, which he remained until October 6, 2018.
