Paulo Branco (* 3. June 1950 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film producer and actor of the independent film . Paulo Branco won the Raimondo Rezzonico Award at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2002 .

Life

Branco studied technical chemistry at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, but broke off his studies two months before graduation and secretly emigrated to London in 1971 to avoid the dictatorship and military service in the colonies. Two years later he went to Paris and began working for the cinema in 1974 under the influence of Frédéric Mitterrand . In 1979 he started producing films.

He has produced over 200 films, including with Raúl Ruiz , Manoel de Oliveira , Alain Tanner , Michel Piccoli , Danièle Dubroux , Chantal Akerman , Olivier Assayas , Wim Wenders and Werner Schroeter . He founded and managed the production companies Gémini Films and Alma Filmes in France and Madragoa Filmes , Atalanta Filmes , Medeia and Clap Filmes in Portugal.

In 1999 he was a member of the jury of the Berlin Film Festival and of the Venice Film Festival in 2005 .

Paulo Branco was named the best film producer in Europe by the European Parliament in 1999 , was named best independent producer at the Locarno Film Festival in 2002 , and was awarded the Golden Horse of the Taipei Film Festival in 2005 . In the same year Jacques Chirac presented him with the Order of the Officier des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France.

Private

Paulo Branco is a horse lover and rider. He owns his own horses, with which he participates in national and international endurance rides. He was also a participant in World Endurance Championships for Portugal.
