Lines of Wellington is a 2012 Portuguese - French feature film . It served as the basis for the Portuguese-French television mini-series As Linhas de Torres Vedras, which lasted several hours .

action

During the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula, the French troops of Marshal Masséna were defeated on September 27, 1810 in the Battle of Buçaco by the British-Portuguese forces under General Wellington . Despite the defeat, the French forces remained superior overall and Wellington retreated towards Torres Vedras . With the lines of Torres Vedras he had a massive defensive ring built there, where he awaited the French army. On the retreat there, he also ordered the complete evacuation of the area between Buçaco and Torres Vedras in order to prevent any supplies and support for the enemy.

The film takes place in this setting. In interconnected narrative strands, Sergeant Francisco Xavier stands between patriotic duty and human feelings, the two commanders-in-chief make their decisions independently of the reality of the population, women and men pursue their own personal goals depending on their social position and process the fleeing people of various social origins respective fate. In a mood between hope and fear, they strive for the final confrontation on the lines of Torres Vedras.

production

The French-Chilean director Raúl Ruiz turned back to Portugal for the first time in many years with The Secrets of Lisbon in 2010 and planned this historical drama for the next. After his death in 2011, producer Paulo Branco offered to direct the project to John Malkovich , who declined and recommended Ruiz's widow Valeria Sarmiento . She accepted the offer and dedicated the film to her late husband.

The shooting took place in the Portuguese mountains of the Serra da Estrela near Folgosinho , in Óbidos and on original locations near Torres Vedras .

The production costs amounted to 4.8 million euros. In Portugal the film grossed just under 300,000 euros. It was shown internationally on television and was released on DVD in various countries , in Germany in the version edited by arte .

reception

The film was shown at several international film festivals . In 2012 he was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and in 2013 he won two prizes at the Globos de Ouro .

The critics judged the lavishly staged film very differently. The theatrical achievements, the historical accuracy and the detailed equipment were mainly praised, the closely interwoven actions of the people and the poetic images were also recognized. The different storylines, on the other hand, were sometimes considered to be too numerous, making an effective identification with individual characters almost impossible. The drama of a war film, which can be expected from the subject matter and title, has also given way to a more in-depth consideration, which was sometimes seen as a disappointed expectation, especially among the general public. In addition, it was criticized that the stars mentioned in the film as effective in advertising predominantly had short appearances instead of leading roles, although the acting performance of the other actors was consistently convincing.

Lines of Wellington was the Portuguese nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards .
