Paulo Manuel Gonçalves Pires (born February 26, 1967 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese actor and former model.

Life

After military service and an unsuccessful application for a place in psychology, he worked at the age of 21 and at the invitation of friends, for the first time as a model , at a fashion show at the Feira Internacional de Lisboa . Following his professional modeling training (with João Carlos), he became a popular model, occasionally also internationally. After minor appearances, his role in Cinco Dias, Cinco Noites (1996, directed by José Fonseca e Costa ) marked the beginning of his career in cinema. Pires played the leading role in the award-winning film adaptation of the autobiographical novel, which the most important Portuguese communist Álvaro Cunhal wrote under the pseudonym Manuel Tiago. From now on, his modeling career took a back seat, while his appearances in film and especially on television increased.

He played his first role in the theater in 1996, as a homosexual in Kevon Elyot's A minha Noite com Gil ("My Night with Gil") at the Teatro Aberto . A number of other appearances followed, including a. in JM Barries Peter Pan (1997 at the Teatro São Luiz ) and in Peter Shaffer's Real Caçada ao Sol ("The royal hunt for the sun", 1999 at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II ). At the Globos de Ouro 1997 he was named theater personality of the year.

In addition to his frequent roles on television (occasionally in Spain), especially in telenovelas (occasionally also in Brazil, so 1996) and at gala appearances, he is also a recognized actor in Portuguese films .

Pires has been married to the Austrian model Astrid Werdnig since 2000 , who now works as a psychologist in Portugal. They have a daughter (Chloe, * 2004). The Biography Channel aired a documentary about his life in May 2008.
