José Maria de Sá Caetano (born October 26, 1933 in Leiria ) is a Portuguese film director and screenwriter.

Life

He studied architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa , today's Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon . In 1959 he went to London, to the London School of Film Technique (now London Film School ) and the Slade School of Fine Art . As early as 1960 he made his first experiences in Portuguese film when he was assistant to Fernando Lopes in his short film As Pedras eo Tempo (The Stones and Time), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay. Caetano stayed on in London, where he worked for cinema and television productions until 1973, especially for the BBC .

After returning to Portugal in 1973, he edited José Fonseca e Costa's documentary Golf in the Algarve . Film funding from the newly created Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual enabled him to make his first feature film, As Ruínas no Interior (The ruins inside), which he was able to complete in 1977. This deeply sad film did not attract much attention from the general public, but it convinced the critics as well as his following work Um S Marginal (for example: An S on the edge), a disturbing look at the upheaval in Portugal at the end of the 1970s. After his next film Azul, Azul (blue, blue) received little praise, he limited himself to his activities for television.

During this time he also worked for international productions in Portugal, for example for White Nights in 1985 and for Das Russland-Haus in 1990 . It was not until 2004 that he reappeared as a director. His romantic comedy Maria E as Outras , with the popular Catarina Furtado in the lead role, briefly became a public success in 2004.
