Life

Catarina Furtado (painting by Carlos Botelho )

Catarina Furtado studied dance at the National Conservatory in Lisbon (until 1990) and journalism at CENJOR (Centro de Formação Protocolar para Jornalistas). From 1995 to 1997 she attended the London International School of Acting .

Her first acting work in the film was a small supporting role for Manoel de Oliveira , after which she played in several short films and for young directors. She appears again and again as an actress in very different roles, also in films with more audience appeal ( Fátima , Maria e as outras ). With the Portuguese-Italian television production Fátima , she first became known to a larger audience as an actress. The atmospheric melodrama is based around the apparition of Mary from Fátima in 1917, and Catarina Furtado had the only female leading role here alongside Joaquim de Almeida , Diogo Infante and Omero Antonutti . But she became known primarily through television.

As early as 1991 she presented the music show Top + on RTP1 , and in 1992 MTV -Portugal for SIC . In 1993 she hosted the talent show Chuva de Estrelas (English: "It's raining stars") and became popular. Since then she has hosted a large number of gala programs, casting shows and reports, and conducted television interviews with international stars. She also played in various telenovelas , in guest roles and leading roles alike, as well as in the television crime series Cidade Despida ("Undressed City").

She presented the first two seasons of the successful Endemol production “Operação Triunfo” , a singing casting show, the third season of which she no longer presented due to her two consecutive pregnancies in 2006/2007. She is married to the actor João Reis and has a daughter and a son with him.

She is the UN Special Envoy for the United Nations Population Fund and first appeared in public in this capacity in 1999.

She will moderate the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 from May 8 to 12, 2018 together with Filomena Cautela , Sílvia Alberto and Daniela Ruah .

reception

Catarina Furtado is extremely well known and also quite popular in Portugal, because of her dazzling appearance and her cheerful manner. She became known for her rather simple, mass TV food, but she is also socially committed. It was her commitment to a Portuguese non-governmental organization engaged in family support and family planning through which she was appointed by the UN as a special ambassador. In this role, she shows serious commitment. She has moderated various programs on several occasions, such as the various series of reports Príncipes do Nada ("Princes of Nothing") about voluntary services and civil engagement in African countries, for whose theme music she wrote the text (interpreted by Lúcia Moniz ).

She has never been noticed by scandals or personal escapades, and outside of her work she is not very present in the jet set . It also has an intellectually somewhat more demanding side that is not often published. For example, she consciously bought a house next to the home of the writer Camilo Castelo Branco (1825–1890) in São Miguel de Silk in northern Portugal , and occasionally also made films of somewhat higher quality , for example Pesadelo Cor de Rosa received critical acclaim in 1998, and 2005's Animal is one of the most challenging films she has worked on to date. But her image is undoubtedly determined by the light muse, with films like Fátima , and above all by her glamorous television work.
