Life

After leaving school, Wogan first worked in a branch of the Bank of Ireland in Dublin . Through a newspaper advertisement he got a job at RTÉ , for which he initially worked in the news and documentaries area. After two years he switched to the entertainment division. He presented the quiz show Jackpot , which was discontinued in 1967. He applied to the BBC in 1965 for a position as TV presenter on BBC 2 . However, it was turned down because it was judged that it was unacceptable to employ him, given that Denis Tuohy is already a presenter with an Irish accent. Although he was officially informed that there was no vacancy for someone in his field of activity. He contacted the BBC again and was accepted to host the BBC Radio 1 show Midday Spin , which aired from 1966 onwards. He was one of the first presenters of BBC Radio 1. From 1972 to 1984 and from 1993 to 2009 he presented the morning show ( Wake Up to Wogan ) on BBC Radio 2 . From 2010 to 2015 he presented the Sunday morning show Weekend Wogan .

Wogan was one of the founders of the BBC charity program Children in Need , which he presented regularly from 1980 until 2014. He resigned from the 2015 show at short notice for health reasons.

He was known for his ironic and sarcastic comments, especially on the Eurovision Song Contest , which he commented off -screen from 1971 on the radio and from 1973 on BBC television . At the Eurovision Song Contest 1998 he was both moderator (with Ulrika Jonsson ) and commentator. From 1978 he also moderated the British preliminary round of the competition on a regular basis. In August 2008 he announced that he would no longer be available for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009.

1997 Wogan received an OBE ; In 2005 he was named Knight Commander of the Order. He was married from 1965 and had three children with his wife.
