Gerardo Chavez

Gerardo Chávez López (born November 16, 1937 in Trujillo ) is a Peruvian painter . He is classified as one of the most important contemporary artists in Peru .

biography

Chávez studied painting at the higher Peruvian art university "la Escuela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes".

After his trips to Europe he settled in Paris .

His works have been shown in several exhibitions in America , Asia and Europe . Many of his works are in private collections in the United States , Europe and some museums.

Thanks to the initiative of the Gerardo Chávez Foundation , the northern Peruvian city of Trujillo has opened its first museum of modern art.

inspiration

Chavez finds his inspiration in the Pre-Columbian and Shamanic the myths of his cultural group in northern Peru. In contrast to other colleagues of his time, he sees himself as the intersection between the Indian mix and the European tradition.
