Åse Kleveland (born March 18, 1949 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish - Norwegian musician and politician . She was the culture minister of her country from 1990 to 1996 .

Life

Kleveland moved from Sweden to Norway in 1956. She studied law at the University of Oslo ; a special focus was on copyright . In 1966 she performed for Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest with the piece Intet he nytt under solen and reached 3rd place. In the 1980s, Kleveland was President of the Association of Norwegian Artists and Musicians. In 1986 she hosted the first Eurovision Song Contest on Norwegian soil in Bergen , after the duo Bobbysocks had won the competition the previous year . From 1986 to 1990 she headed an Equality Council of the Norwegian Government. From 1990 to 1996 Kleveland was Minister of Culture for the Arbeiderpartiet under Gro Harlem Brundtland , and until 1991 she was Minister of Culture and Churches. In this role, she took over the political leadership of the 17th Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer .

She was also President of the Swedish Film Institute from 2000 to 2006 . In June 2007 she became chair of Human-Etisk Forbund , a secular-humanistic Norwegian organization.

In 2010 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which was successfully treated.

After she gave up her musical career in favor of her political one, Kleveland did not release a new single until 2015: Hvor Skal vi dra? . The single Fritt liv with the Raga Rockers followed in 2017 .

Kleveland is married to the film director Oddvar Bull Tuhus .
