Thorvald Stoltenberg (born July 8, 1931 in Oslo ; † July 13, 2018 there ) was a Norwegian lawyer , diplomat and politician of the Social Democratic Labor Party .

In 1958 he joined the Norwegian foreign service and was a. a. stationed in Yugoslavia . From 1965 he was the personal secretary of the foreign minister, and in the 1970s he was state secretary in several social democratic governments. From 1979 to 1981 Stoltenberg was Norwegian Defense Minister , from 1987 to 1989 and again from 1990 to 1993 Foreign Minister . In 1990 he was also the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ; he had previously served as his country's ambassador to the United Nations since 1989 . From 1996 to 1999 he was the Norwegian ambassador in Copenhagen . From 1999 to 2008 he was President of the Norwegian Red Cross . In 2007 Stoltenberg received the Willy Brandt Prize .

He was married to Karin Stoltenberg , who died in 2012 . The couple had three children, including the Norwegian Prime Minister and later NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the epidemiologist Camilla Stoltenberg . Thorvald Stoltenberg died a few days after his 87th birthday in Oslo.
