Jan Henry T. Olsen (born August 20, 1956 in Bergen - † July 10, 2018 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From 1992 to 1996 he was the Minister for Fisheries in his country.

education and profession

Between 1997 and 1982 Olsen studied law , social sciences and social economics at the University of Tromsø . He continued the latter at the University of Oslo . From 1984 until 1990 he worked in the fishing industry. He worked as an economic advisor for a fishing association and in the administration of the fishing association of the province of Troms . From 1990 he was press spokesman at Norsk Hydro .

After his tenure as Minister of Fisheries, Olsen worked in various companies in various positions.

Political career

In 1982 he was for a short time chairman of the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) in Troms. From 1983 to 1992 Olsen was a member of parliament in the Fylkesting of Troms. In the last two years of it he was the Fylkesordfører of the province.

On September 4, 1992 he was appointed Minister of Fisheries in the Brundtland III government. He held this office until the end of October 25, 1996. During his term of office, the negotiations with the European Union took place before the referendum on Norway's accession to the EU in 1994. Due to his initially negative attitude towards the EU, he was given the name "No Fish Olsen". In the course of the negotiations he changed his position and finally advocated membership. Olsen was elected to Tromsø City Council in 2007 .

Private

Olsen suffered from Alzheimer's disease from 2008 . About this experience he wrote the book Skynd deg å elske ( German : hurry to love ) together with his wife Laila Lanes . The documentary Min elskede , which was released in 2011, is also about the life of the two, whose openness was later praised by doctors and party colleagues.
