The Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (short AUF ; German: Arbeiter-Jugendliga) is the youth organization of the Arbeiderpartiet , the social democratic party of Norway . It is the largest political youth organization in the country.

history

The first social democratic youth organization in Norway was the Norges Sosialdemokratiske Ungdomsforbund , founded in 1903 , which was renamed the Norges Kommunistiske Ungdomsforbund in 1921. When the Norges Kommunistiske Parti split off in 1923 , the NKU joined the new party almost entirely. In the Arbeiderpartiet the new youth organization Venstrekommunistisk Ungdomsfylkning was founded.

1927 went the party Norges Socialdemokratiske Arbeiderparti in the Arbeiderpartiet. With the youth organization of this party, the Norges Sosialistiske Ungdomsforbund , the UP emerged from the Venstrekommunistisk Ungdomsfylkning.

In 1930 the AUF had a total of 14,000 members in 275 groups, compared to the 80,000 of the Labor Party. By 1933 the number of members had grown to 21,000 in 410 groups. Within the party, the AUF was on the left wing and was very skeptical of parliamentary democracy. In the 1936 election campaign, the AUF played an important role for the Labor Party. She organized numerous youth meetings, set up theater troupes and produced an election newspaper with a circulation of 100,000.

On July 22, 2011 there was a right-wing extremist attack on the island of Utøya , in which 69 participants in an AUF youth camp died.
