Young European Socialists (YES, dt. European Young Socialists and Young Socialists ) is the merger of the socialist and social democratic youth organizations in Europe. At the same time it is the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party of Europe (PES) and belongs to the Socialist Youth International IUSY . YES is based in Brussels . YES emerged in 2013 from the "European Community Organization of Socialist Youth" (ECOSY).

Member organizations in German-speaking countries are the Jusos in the SPD, the Socialist Youth of Germany - Die Falken , the Socialist Youth of Austria , the Association of Socialist Students of Austria and, since November 2012, the Young Socialists Switzerland (JUSO).

YES chairman has been Alicia Homs (Juventudes Socialistas de España) since 2019, Maj Jensen (Danmarks Socialdemokratiske Ungdom) is Secretary General of the European Young Socialists.

history

Under the name European Community Organization of Socialist Youth , ECOSY was founded on November 7, 1992 in Oegstgeest , The Hague , in the Netherlands . At the same time, the founding party congress of the PES took place in The Hague.

ECOSY followed up on the European activities previously coordinated within IUSY , especially in the European Leaders Meeting . However, the establishment of ECOSY was controversial. It was about the question of whether an organization that covers the EU alone would be sought or whether the concept of a pan-European union would be preferred. The latter - called European Socialist Youth (ESY) - was particularly demanded by the Swedes and Austrians, who at that time did not yet belong to the EU. They were supported here by the German lawyers .

Ultimately, both ECOSY and ESY were founded. However, ESY remained organizationally weak and was renamed the European Committee a little later and thus operates as the Continental Committee of IUSY.

As early as 2001, ECOSY accepted the Eastern and Central European organizations, which previously had only one seat on the ECOSY board as associated members, as full members.

For a long time, the Young Socialists Switzerland (JUSO) only had observer status due to Switzerland's non-membership in the EU. At the Bureau Meeting on November 3, 2012 in Cyprus, they were finally granted full membership status.

At their congress in Bommersvik in March 2013, ECOSY was renamed YES - Young European Socialists . This made it clear that the organization no longer only includes organizations from member states of the European Union or the European Community, which the old name referred to.

structure

When it was founded in 1992, it was decided that the posts of ECOSY President and Vice President would rotate between the member organizations of the respective countries, analogous to the Presidency of the European Community. In 1994 the Presidium was expanded to include two Vice-Chairs elected by the Congress, Umberto Gentiloni ( Sinistra Giovanile ) and Conall McDevitt (Labor Youth). Since the beginning of 1997 ECOSY has been headed by a secretly elected chairman. At that time, the Austrian Andreas Schieder ( SJÖ ) was elected in Strasbourg .

Between 1997 and 2005, the six-monthly change only took place in one of the posts as deputy chairman. Six of the vice chairmen were elected secretly. Since 2005, all - now eight - deputy chairpersons have been elected by the Congress.

The full-time Secretary General , who has been elected by the Congress since 1992, has a strong position in the Presidium . The first ECOSY general secretary was the Frenchman Philip Cordery ( MJS ).

The board (bureau) is composed of the representatives nominated by the member organizations. Every country has two votes.

The Congress (Congress) will be held every two years and is the highest decision-making body. Each country has twelve votes.

When it comes to questions of content, the majority principle is used. Resolutions on EU politics are binding for all member organizations if they have found a two-thirds majority at the congress.

YES congresses

YES summer camps

Probably the most important events of the European Young Socialists are the summer camps, where up to 3000 like-minded young people meet. With the exception of the IUSY festival years, the camps take place annually.
