Andreas Schieder (born April 16, 1969 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He was the top candidate of the SPÖ for the European elections in Austria 2019 .

From 2008 to 2013 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance . From 2013 to 2017 he was the SPÖ club chairman in the Austrian National Council , from November 2017 managing club chairman. On September 25, 2018, he resigned from this office, but was still a member of the SPÖ National Council until July 2019.

Schieder's father Peter Schieder was a well-known SPÖ politician in Vienna.

Schieder attended elementary school in Hütteldorf and the federal high school in Astgasse, both in Vienna's 14th district, Penzing , and then the federal high school in Kundmanngasse in the 3rd district. He completed a degree in economics at the University of Vienna , which he completed with a master's degree.

He then worked in the economic policy department of the Vienna Chamber of Labor . Politicized by the debate about Kurt Waldheim's war past , Schieder joined the Socialist Youth . From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice President of the Socialist Youth International (IUSY) , President of the European Young Socialists (ECOSY) from 1997 to 1999, District Council in Penzing and from 1997 to 2006 Member of the Vienna State Parliament and City Council . From 2002 to 2020, Schieder was the successor to his father, Peter Schieder, district chairman of the SPÖ Penzing and since 2005 a member of the state party executive of the SPÖ Vienna. On October 30, 2006 he was sworn in as a member of the National Council and became his party's foreign policy spokesman. Since January 10, 2007 he has been the international secretary of the SPÖ federal organization.

On July 1, 2008, he became the successor of State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery , Heidrun Silhavy , who took over the Federal Ministry for Women, Media and Regional Policy in the Federal Chancellery in the Gusenbauer government . As State Secretary he was responsible for the public service. He was also a member of the Faymann I federal government, which was sworn in on December 2, 2008, as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance .

As State Secretary on the Austrian side, Schieder was one of the negotiators for the future of Hypo Alpe Adria with Bavaria in 2009. The negotiations led to the nationalization of the bank. Warranty claims were waived - against the advice of officials.

On October 28, 2013 Andreas Schieder was elected by the SPÖ parliamentary club as the new SPÖ club chairman in parliament; - he succeeded Josef Cap , who had to give up this post after twelve years at the top of the club.

In May 2014 Schieder was unanimously elected federal chairman of Naturfreunde Austria . In February 2016 he was appointed spokesman for the social democratic club chairmen of the EU member states. Since the federal party congress in June 2016, Schieder has also been the deputy federal party chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Austria .

On November 9, 2017, Christian Kern , who had since resigned, became the chairman of the SPÖ parliamentary club. Schieder was entrusted with the office of executive club chairman.

In mid-November 2017, Schieder announced on ORF television that he would run for the successor to the resigning Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl in January 2018 . In a vote against Michael Ludwig for the chairmanship of the SPÖ Vienna at an extraordinary state party conference on January 27, 2018, he was defeated by his opponent with 43 to 57 percent of the delegate's votes. On September 25, 2018, Schieder resigned from his position as executive club chairman of the social democratic parliamentary group. This was in connection with the change from Kern to Pamela Rendi-Wagner in the party leadership of the SPÖ. In October 2018, Schieder was chosen as the national SPÖ top candidate for the European Parliament elections in May 2019 . In terms of content, he wanted to focus on the topics of tax justice, social justice and the issues of climate and nature protection during the election campaign, as he said in an interview after his freestyle at the SPÖ federal party conference.

With the constituent session of the 9th European Parliament on July 2, 2019, he moved into the European Parliament as an Austrian member of the European Parliament . Christoph Matznetter took over his national council mandate .

In February 2020 he was succeeded by Jürgen Czernohorszky as chairman of the SPÖ Penzing, Schieder became deputy chairman.

Private

Andreas Schieder has a son with the former SPÖ politician Sonja Wehsely in Vienna . In his private life he is a functionary at SK Rapid Wien and as president of FV Austria XIII. Schieder is a hiker, health athlete and, as a long-term member of Nature Friends Austria, is active in nature and environmental protection.
