Christoph Matznetter (born June 8, 1959 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). From January 11, 2007 to December 2, 2008, he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance . He was then a member of the National Council from 2008 to 2013 . From March 2014 to November 2017, Matznetter was again a member of the National Council. From October 2017 to the end of January 2018, he and Andrea Brunner were interim federal manager of the SPÖ, and from February 2018 the previous Styrian regional party manager Max Lercher was appointed as his successor . Since July 2, 2019, he has been a member of the National Council again.

After attending primary school at the Lycée Français in Vienna 1965–1969 and high school ( AHS Amerlingstrasse in Vienna 1970–1978), Christoph Matznetter studied political science from 1978 to 1982 at the University of Vienna . After almost 20 years of professional activity, he resumed his studies in 2001 and received his doctorate in philosophy in 2002. His professional training is that of a chartered accountant ( tax consultant and sworn auditor, now sworn auditor ).

Professional background

During his studies, Christoph Matznetter worked as a tax consultant trainee (1980–1985) and completed this training with the state examination as a tax consultant. Since 1985 he has acted as an independent tax advisor and then as a sworn auditor (now a sworn auditor and tax advisor). From 1985 to 2004 he was the managing partner of Merkur-Treuhand Wirtschaftstreuhand- und Steuerberatungsges.mbH Between 1995 and 1999, Matznetter was a partner in a joint consulting company with the women's rights activist Klaudia Thalhammer-Koch and the lawyer Gabriel Lansky .

Political career

Christoph Matznetter began his political career as early as the late 1970s as AHS state school spokesman for Vienna and a member of the Austrian federal student council. He later became the federal coordinator of the SSZ Socialist School Center (later Action Critical Schoolchildren ) and student adviser for the SJÖ - Socialist Youth Austria .

In 2000 he became a member of the federal party executive committee of the SPÖ. In 2001 he became a member of the federal party presidium as the SPÖ federal party cashier. From December 2002 to January 2007 he was a member of the National Council and deputy chairman of the budget committee. During this time he also exercised the function of budget and finance spokesman for the SPÖ.

Since June 2005 he has succeeded René Alfons Haiden as President of the Social Democratic Business Association. From June 2005 until his appointment as State Secretary he also held the position of Vice President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce .

On January 11, 2007, he was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He held this office during the federal government of Gusenbauer until the inauguration of the new federal government Faymann I on December 2, 2008. After all, Matznetter was again a member of the National Council from 2008 to 2013. After the National Council election in 2013, he lost his mandate and left parliament. When Laura Rudas renounced her seat on the National Council in March 2014, Matznetter returned to the National Council.

Since January 1, 2009, Christoph Matznetter has again held the position of Vice President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce .

On September 30, 2017, two weeks before the National Council election in Austria 2017 , the previous SPÖ federal manager Georg Niedermühlbichler resigned from his position in the course of the Silberstein affair . On October 1st, Matznetter joined Andrea Brunner on an interim basis as federal manager. As head of the Federal Chancellor of Christian Kern deployed task force he put the contract and invoice Gebarungen with Tal Silberstein open.

On the federal election proposal of the Social Democratic Party for parliamentary elections in 2017 Matznetter was ranked at No. 17th However, due to ranking over other lists, it was left empty-handed and received no NR mandate .

On June 17, 2019, the SPÖ Vienna appointed Matznetter as the successor to Andreas Schieder for his National Council mandate, which became available. At the same time, Matznetter was nominated in 6th place on the state list for the NR election in September 2019 and thus reached parliament.

In 1985 Christoph Matznetter did community service with the Wiener Kinderfreunde . Until 2004 he was also on the board of the Austrian North-South Institute for Development Cooperation (ÖNSI).
