politics

From 1996 to 2005, Niedermühlbichler was SPÖ district councilor in the inner city and from 1998 to 2001 club chairman of the SPÖ district councils. From 2001 to 2005 he worked as a deputy district mayor. At the same time he was district manager of the SPÖ Vienna-Innere Stadt from 1998 to 2006. He has been a member of the Vienna State Parliament and the City Council since November 18, 2005 and represents the SPÖ in the 18th legislative period in the “Housing, Housing and Urban Renewal” committee. From August 1, 2014 to June 2016, he was regional manager of the SPÖ Vienna.

On June 13, 2016, he succeeded Gerhard Schmid as SPÖ federal manager.

In August 2017, the psychoanalyst Rotraud A. Perner left the SPÖ. She accused Niedermühlbichler of “statements that were misogynistic in her opinion” and that he and Chancellor Christian Kern were conducting dirty campaigning against the political competitor.

On September 30, 2017, two weeks before the National Council election in Austria 2017 , Niedermühlbichler announced his resignation as federal manager of the SPÖ in the course of the Silberstein affair . The resignation was in connection with partly racist, partly as a false flag campaign , allegedly created for voter analysis Facebook pages.

While Niedermühlbichler initially denied that he and the party leadership knew about the sites, profil and Die Presse published that the external SPÖ campaign advisor Tal Silberstein had them put on. The PR consultant Peter Puller was commissioned by him to look after the website. After Silberstein's arrest in August 2017, the SPÖ election campaign manager Paul Pöchhacker , who reported directly to Niedermühlbichler, took over his duties and instructed Puller to continue the pages in order to conceal a connection to Silberstein and the SPÖ. The pages were taken offline immediately after Silberstein's involvement became known. Pöchhacker was then suspended .

On the federal election proposal of the SPÖ for the 2017 National Council election, Niedermühlbichler was ranked 9th. Niedermühlbichler did not achieve an NR mandate by pre-listing from other lists and remained in the Vienna Landtag.
