Gerhard Schmid (born September 13, 1960 ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He was the SPÖ Federal Managing Director and is a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council .

Life

Schmid was the chairman of the Socialist Youth Hietzing from 1976 to 1982 . He completed a teaching degree at the Vocational Education Academy and was a vocational school teacher from 1981 to 1997 . As a part-time job, he completed a diploma course in political science and pedagogy and then a doctorate in political science at the University of Vienna . From 1997 he was vice director of a Viennese vocational school, from 2000 department head and director at the Federal Pedagogical Institute in Vienna. After the transition from this institution to the newly created University of Education in Viennahe worked there briefly as a professor. Between 1997 and 2015 Schmid was district councilor in Vienna-Hietzing, in April 2011 he was elected district party chairman in Hietzing.

In 2007 he was appointed to his cabinet by Werner Faymann , then Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology. After Faymann was appointed as Federal Chancellor in 2008 , Schmid followed him as a research assistant in the Federal Chancellery.

In January 2015 he was appointed Deputy Head of Cabinet, and in June he was nominated as SPÖ Federal Managing Director to succeed Norbert Darabos . On November 24, 2015 he was sworn in as a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council. On June 13, 2016, Georg Niedermühlbichler succeeded him as SPÖ Federal Managing Director.

Schmid is the author of numerous publications and teaches regularly at the University of Vienna. In 1999 he published the book "Österreich im Aufbruch. Die Österreichische Sozialdemokratie in der Kreisky (1970-1983)" ( ISBN 3-7065-1264-5 ) with STUDIEN Verlag .

In June 2019 he was elected chairman of the SPÖ federal education system.
