coat of arms
Blazon : In blue over a golden rock, criss-crossed by a blue wavy bar, a golden eagle with a golden crown and red tongue. The municipality colors are yellow-blue.
The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1970, symbolizes the place name with the rock and the stream. The eagle comes from the coat of arms of the Polheimer zu Wartenburg , the owners of the rule Kogl , to which the largest part of today's municipality of Steinbach belonged. But rock and Adler also point to the location of the municipality on Höllengebirge and its wildlife.
history
Steinbach was already settled by the Celts in pre-Christian times. A parish church was first mentioned in a document in 1276. Until a continuous road was built on the east bank of the Attersee, Steinbach remained in quiet seclusion. The genius loci is undoubtedly Gustav Mahler , who composed his third symphony on the lakeshore in three summer months , in which, in the opinion of many, the seascape is unmistakable.
Since 1490 the place has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .
Since 1918 it has belonged to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.
The parish of Steinbach am Attersee: Until 1120 Steinbach was subordinate to the parish of Altmünster . When St. Georgen in Attergau broke away from Altmünster at that time , Steinbach was subordinated to this parish as a branch . The parish chronicle begins with the year 1781.

The reason for the population decline is the negative balance of migration , which could not be offset by a slightly positive birth balance.
Culture and sights
- The parish church of St. Andreas stands on a hill that gives rise to some suspicions. In the middle of the 19th century, statuettes of pagan deities were found here during excavations in the cemetery. Celts and Romans are likely to have already used this place. A legend tells of a warm spring not far from the church and of caves in the church hill. The idea of a pagan cult site is therefore obvious. A Christian church at this point is attested for the year 760. The exact construction time of today's church is not known, but it is assumed that the tower was built around 1410. The late Gothic church building, around 100 years younger, some secondary sources speak of 1516, which is consecrated to St. Andrew, was built under the Stefan Wultinger construction works from Wilding near Vöcklamarkt.
- At the entrance to the lake of the Gasthof Föttinger is the composing house in which Gustav Mahler composed the 2nd and 3rd symphonies during his stays at the Attersee from 1893–1896. In the house, which was renovated in 1983, there is a small exhibition about the composer.
- The forester's house in Weißenbach was used by Gustav Klimt for his last summer stays. Between 1914 and 1916 Gustav Klimt rented a room in this house and painted the forester's house twice - it was his only summer residence that he also painted. Another picture shows a lumberjack's house below the Schoberstein. Gustav Klimt's discovery of the Attersee as a refuge for the summer resort began in the summer of 1900.
- Villa Langer was built in 1891 for Ing.Josef Brauner, co-founder and co-owner of the Wiener Lohner-Werke . Josef's daughter Hedwig Brauner married Friedrich Paulick's son. From this marriage comes Hedwig Paulick, who was married to Gustav Langer. The house is still owned by the family. Gustav Klimt and his companion Emilie Flöge spent their last summer at Villa Langer in Weißenbach in 1916.
Personalities
The pianist Friedrich Gulda (1930-2000) and the philatelist Philipp von Ferrary (1850-1917) are buried in Steinbach am Attersee, the latter being buried here under the name "Philipp Arnold". A marble plaque at the entrance to the parish church indicates him.
