Gustav Mahler lived in the old "Gasthof zum Höllengebirge" in Steinbach am Attersee from 1893 to 1896 and composed some of his works there. In order to be able to work undisturbed in peace and seclusion, the composing house was built on the lake property. In 1983 it was renovated true to the original.
