The castle was originally a monastery that was founded in 748, it was dissolved in 1791 and in 1809 Emperor Napoléon handed over the monastery building and its goods to the Bavarian field marshal Karl Philipp von Wrede , who converted it into a castle.
The monastery church was built in Gothic style from 1470 and consecrated in 1487. In the middle of the 18th century the facade, the towers and the main portal were redesigned. After a devastating fire in 1774, which among other things fell victim to the church roof, further changes are likely to have been made. After the monastery was dissolved, the church got the status of a parish church; In 2005 it was elevated to a minor basilica .

The complex consists of the former collegiate church of St. Michael , Mondsee Castle (former Benedictine monastery), the former farm buildings , the enclosing walls and former staff apartments , made of Roman walls and medieval graves , the former vicarage (today municipal office) , the former collegiate high school, the vicarage (former monastery wing), the Ignatia-Wrede - and the Franztaler monument.

Note: Under GstNr. .21 the basilica and parish church of St. Michael are therefore also under monument protection.
