The Sinistra Giovanile ( Young Left ) was the youth wing of the Italian party Democrats of the Sinistra .

After the main faction of the PCI was renamed Partito Democratico della Sinistra in 1991 , the youth organization, the Federazione dei Giovani Comunisti , also renamed itself to Sinistra Giovanile nel PDS ( Young Left in the PDS ) and later to Sinistra Giovanile. The organ of publication was the parent party's daily newspaper L'Unità .

The Sinistra Giovanile belonged to the international socialist youth organizations ECOSY and IUSY .

IV. National Congress and Dissolution

The IV. National Congress from 2-4. March 2007 was under the sign of the already foreseeable merger of the mother party Democratici di Sinistra . After the decision to re-establish the office of president, Roberto Speranza was elected first president by hand with a clear majority. Fausto Raciti was elected Secretary General with 89.8% of the vote .

In spite of the unity of personnel, the debate about the lead motion was all the more fierce about the future course and the attitude towards the merger of parties. In addition to the welcome greeting "Here is our Partito Democratico" "( Italian " Ecco il nostro Partito Democratico " ) supported by Speranza and Raciti, there was a counter-motion from the left-wing minority" In the end, it's about saving the world "(" Alla fine c'era da salvare la terra ”) in the room. A compromise submitted by the Presidium was able to prevail, but numerous delegates left the congress in protest before the vote.

On October 14, 2007, when the mother party Democratici di Sinistra merged to form the new Partito Democratico , the Sinistra Giovanile also dissolved. It was not until November 21, 2008 that a new youth association, the Giovani Democratici , was established there, and Fausto Raciti has been General Secretary since then.
