Nicola Zingaretti (born October 11, 1965 in Rome ) is an Italian politician and leader of the Democratic Party ( PD ). He was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008 and has been President of the Lazio Region since 2013 .

Career

Zingaretti became a member of the Communist Party of Italy (PCI) as a youth and was active from 1982 in the peace movement and anti-racist initiatives. In 1985 he was appointed secretary (chairman) of the Communist Youth (FGCI) ( Federazione Giovanile Comunista Italiana ) in the Lazio region and thus a full-time party official. As such, he took part in all the renaming, transformations and mergers of the PCI after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc : in 1991 in the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS), in 1998 in the Left Democrats (DS) and in 2007 in the Democratic Party (PD).

From 1992 to 1995 Zingaretti was chairman of the Sinistra Giovanile Italy (Young Left), the successor organization to the FGCI and youth organization of the PDS / DS. In 1992 he was elected for the first time for his party in the municipal council of the city of Rome. From 1995 to 1997 he was Chairman of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) and Deputy Chairman of the Socialist International (SI).

From 1998 to 2000 he headed the Left Democrats' office for international relations. In 2000 he became chairman of the Left Democrats in the city of Rome. In 2004 he moved into the European Parliament for the Uniti nell'Ulivo list formed around the left-wing democrats . There he belonged to the Socialist Group . In 2006 he became chairman of the Left Democrats in the Lazio region and in 2007, after renaming it to the Democratic Party (PD), was confirmed in this position. On April 30, 2008, he was directly elected President of the Province of Rome in the provincial elections with 51.48% of the vote .

Zingaretti was nominated by his party in 2012 as a candidate for the mayoral election of Rome in 2013. However, after the regional parliament was dissolved because of corruption scandals in which representatives of his party were involved, he instead became the top candidate in the Lazio region . In the early regional elections on February 24 and 25, 2013, he was elected President of the region to succeed Renata Polverini . He won 40.65% of the vote, his strongest competitor, the neo-fascist politician Francesco Storace , 29.71%.

On March 3, 2019, Zingaretti was elected to succeed Matteo Renzi as chairman of the Democratic Party in Italy.

Nicola Zingaretti is the brother of the actor Luca Zingaretti .
