Roberto Speranza (born January 4, 1979 in Potenza ) is an Italian politician . He has been chairman of the left-wing Articolo 1 party since April 2019 and Minister of Health of Italy since September 5, 2019 .

Political career

Speranza holds a degree in political science from the private university LUISS in Rome. He was initially involved in the youth organization of the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats), of which he became national chairman in March 2007. From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the local council in his hometown of Potenza.

The DS was in 2007 in the Partito Democratico (PD), whose founding assembly Speranza belonged. He then took part in the development of the youth organization of the new party. From 2009 to 2010 he was councilor for urban development in Potenza, and from November 2009 he was also chairman of the PD in the Basilicata region . He supported the election of Pier Luigi Bersani as the top candidate of the center-left camp and coordinated the corresponding primary election of the Italia alliance at the end of 2012 . In March 2013, Speranza was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for Basilicata , where he immediately became chairman of the PD parliamentary group. In March 2015, he resigned after a dispute with party chairman and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi over the course of the party and the government.

In March 2017 he left the PD and founded the party Articolo 1 - Movimento Democratico e Progressista (Article 1-MDP) with other members of the left wing, including Pier Luigi Bersani and Enrico Rossi . Speranza initially acted as the new party's coordinator before being elected segretario , i.e. party chairman, in April 2019 . In the parliamentary elections in 2018 he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the left-wing party alliance Liberi e Uguali (“The Free and Equals”). Since September 5, 2019, he has been a member of the Conte II cabinet as Minister of Health.
