Enrico Rossi (born August 28, 1958 in Bientina , Province of Pisa ) is an Italian politician ( PCI , (P) DS , PD , Article 1-MDP ) and has been President of the Tuscany Region since 2010 .

Career

Rossi comes from a working class family. He graduated from the humanistic grammar school in Pontedera and then studied philosophy at the University of Pisa . In 1985 he started working as an editor for the newspaper Il Tirreno . As a member of the Communist Party of Italy (PCI), he became mayor of Pontedera in 1990 and remained - now a member of the Left Democrats (DS) - until 1999.

In 2000 Rossi moved into the regional parliament of Tuscany, to which he was re-elected in 2005. From 2000 to 2010 he was Regional Minister for Health. During this time he reformed the regional health system, which in 2014 ranked first among the Italian regions with normal status.

In the regional elections on March 29, 2010, he ran for the office of President of the region and received almost 60 percent of the votes in the direct election. On May 31, 2015, he was confirmed in office with 48 percent of the vote in the regional elections.

On February 25, 2017, Rossi resigned from the PD and participated in the founding of the Articolo 1 party - Movimento Democratico e Progressista , with Pier Luigi Bersani (party leader of the PD from 2009 to 2013), Roberto Speranza and Vasco Errani . He was the first and so far only regional president of this party. On the occasion of the European elections in May 2019 , he left Articolo 1 and returned to the PD. As reasons, he cited the new course of the PD under Nicola Zingaretti and the desire for unity of the center-left in the face of increased populism and right-wing extremism.
