history

The place Bientina was mentioned for the first time in 793 and was after a long time under the rule of the Archbishop of Pisa . From the 13th to the 15th century, Bientina alternately belonged to the city republics of Lucca and Pisa until it finally surrendered to Florence in 1402 .

Bientina became famous for the drainage of the lake of the same name. This formerly largest Tuscan inland body of water was located on the border between the states of Florence and Lucca and was used extensively for fishing. Since the floods of the Arno led to regular flooding, the first work to drain the lake and the adjacent marshland was undertaken under Cosimo I de 'Medici . However, these were only successfully ended in the second half of the 19th century under the government of Leopoldo II .

In the years 1965–1966, larger parts of the historic city center of Bientina were demolished as part of renovation work. Today the area of the municipality is economically dominated by small businesses (furniture, leather goods).
