history

Castelfranco di Sotto was founded in the 11th century under the name Castelfranco nel Valdarno di Sotto (German tax-exempt castle in the lower Arno valley) as a merger of the places San Bartolomeo a Paterno, San Michele in Carpugnana, San Piero a Vigesimo and San Martino in Catiana under the Reign of Lucca . The tax exemption resulted from a decree by the government of Lucca, which wanted to promote the settlement of the border region to Florence and Pisa in order to secure its own borders. The city wall with sixteen towers was built in the first half of the 13th century. The Palazzo Pretorio was built in the 15th century.

Due to the territorial or provincial reform under Mussolini in 1925 , some places in the province of Pisa changed to the province of Livorno , in return the province of Pisa received the places Castelfranco di Sotto (and Montopoli in Val d'Arno, Santa Maria a Monte, San Miniato and Santa Croce sull'Arno) from the province of Florence (now the Metropolitan City of Florence ).

Events

Every year on the second Sunday in June, the Palio dei Barchini con le Ruote (Palio of the boats on wheels) takes place. The four contrades San Michele in Caprugnana, San Martino a Catiana, San Bartolomeo a Paterno and San Pietro a Vigesimo compete against each other on the Piazza Garibaldi . The event in historical costumes takes place on 8./9. June 2019 for the thirty-third time.
