history

The place is first mentioned in the 8th century in documents of the Bishop of Pisa . A parchment dated June 26, 750 mentions the church of Santa Maria di Cassina . On July 29, 1364, the battle of Cascina between the troops of Pisa and Florence took place near the city , which ended in a victory for the Florentines. The Pisans recorded 1,000 deaths and 2,000 prisoners. Cascina itself initially remained under the influence of Pisa. The government from Pisa reinforced the city walls in 1385 with 14 defense towers. The place first came to Florence in 1407, but remained under the government of Pisa for almost the entire 15th century. After the battle of June 26, 1499, the place then belonged to the Republic of Florence. In 1504 Michelangelo Buonarotti was commissioned to paint a wall painting with scenes from the battle for the Hall of the Five Hundred in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Michelangelo, however, did not get beyond making a few sketches before heading to Rome. Some of the sketches are still in the possession of the Earl of Leicester at Holkham Hall in Norfolk , England today (2011) .
