In the Middle Ages, the main town, known from 887 onwards, was a fortified castle owned by several families, including the Cadolingi from Fucecchio and the Upezzinghi from Pisa. In 1406, with the defeat of the Pisans, the place came to the Republic of Florence . In 1496 the castle was destroyed after an uprising against the Florentines.

From 1927 to 1957, Santa Luce and Orciano Pisano formed the municipality of Santa Luce Orciano . Then the place became an independent municipality again.
