Montopoli in Val d'Arno is an Italian commune with 11,193 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pisa in the Tuscany region .
geography
The community extends over approx. 30 km². It is located approx. 45 km west of the regional capital Florence and 30 km east of the provincial capital Pisa in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone D, 1714 GR / G. Some districts are on the Arno .
The districts include Capanne, Castel del Bosco, Marti and San Romano.
The neighboring communities are Castelfranco di Sotto , Palaia , Pontedera , San Miniato and Santa Maria a Monte .

history
In Montopoli traces of the Etruscans from the 3rd century BC were found. Chr. Found. After that, the place was probably inhabited by the Romans . The place was first mentioned in documents in 1017. Until 1162 the place was under the bishop of Lucca , then it was taken over by Pisa. In 1222 the place was conquered by Florence and returned to Lucca, but already fifteen years later it was again taken by Pisa. Further wars for the place sparked until Montopoli voluntarily submitted to Florence on July 12, 1349. With this it became part of the Duchy of Tuscany , went through the Napoleonic occupation and became part of the unified Italy .
