Due to its location, the municipality and its districts were the scene of wars between Pisa, Lucca and Florence several times in the Middle Ages and the republic changed several times between that of the Pisans and the Fiorentine. When the Republic of Florence completely destroyed the castles and surrounding villages of Appiano and Petriolo in the war against Pisa in 1341, their inhabitants found refuge in the Castello Ponte di Sacco . In 1365 the place was equipped with a city wall, the still existing historical town center was built and an irrigation system was built, which was fed by the Cascina river. With the defeat of Pisa, Ponsacco also came under Fiorentine rule in 1406, but was recaptured in 1494. In 1509 the place fell back to Florence, the towers and large parts of the city wall were destroyed.
