The sources of the era are on the territory of the municipality Volterra springing Era Viva (spring in the forest of Volpaie at Pignano, length 7 km) and Era Morta (Source at Sant'Anastasio and Spicchiaiola, length 6 km). After the confluence, the Era runs in a north-westerly direction through a valley within the hilly landscape of Colline Pisane and flows into the Arno at Pontedera at 10 m above sea level from the left. The catchment area of the Era is called Alto Valdera , while Valdera (Val d'Era) refers to a larger area that also includes communities north of the Arno.

Larger tributaries or brooks of the Era are the Cascina River (21 km), the Torrenti Ragone (12 km) and Sterza (19 km) from the left, and the Torrenti Strolla, Capriggine (also called Capriggine di Camporbiano, 10 km ) from the right ) and Roglio (28 km).

The era touches the areas of the municipalities of Volterra (15 km), Lajatico (6 km), Terricciola (5 km), Peccioli (8 km), Capannoli (8 km), Ponsacco (7 km) and Pontedera (6 km).
